Coach Gary Hayes, with over 33 years of coaching experience in Northwest Indiana, led Purdue Calumet men's and women's basketball programs to 214 wins. During his tenure at Purdue Calumet, Coach Hayes led the women's head program to three CCAC Conference Championships and was named Coach of the Year four times. His 1995-96 Purdue Calumet Women's Basketball Team recorded a 27-5 record claiming the CCAC Conference Championship and becoming the first team to qualify for the NAIA National Women's Basketball Tournament. That season, the Peregrines were ranked 25th in the NAIA with a defense that ranked 5th in the nation. As the men's basketball coach, his teams were constantly ranked as the number one defense in the conference and ranked Top 20 in the country each year.
Additionally, Coach Hayes was a teacher at the Gary Community School Corporation and Lake Station Community Schools, served ten years as an Athletic Director for Lake Station Community Schools, and has also held coaching positions at Lake Station, Griffith, Portage, Gary Wirt, Gary Westside. He was also recently inducted into the Hammond Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.Coach Hayes and holds a Bachelor's Degree in Health and Physical Education from Indiana State University, a Master's Degree in Education from Indiana University and graduated from Clark High School.
