Baseball Unable to Break Through in 3-0 Loss to Grand Valley State

The Pride baseball team took on Grand Valley State University this Friday in a GLIAC conference matchup where the Pride would fall by a score of 3-0

The Basics
  • Records: Purdue Northwest (7-13), Grand Valley State (21-4)
  • Location: Allendale, Michigan
  • GLIAC conference game.
The Breakdown
  • Billy Chidsey (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) led the Pride offensively with a 2-for-4 performance, accounting for half of Purdue Northwest's four hits in the game. Drew Kosteba (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) and Denham Kozy (Munster, Ind./Munster) each added a hit as the Pride were limited to four total hits.
  • Owen Walkowiak (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) got the start on the mound and delivered a strong outing despite taking the loss, allowing three runs on five hits over 6.0 innings while striking out four and working around traffic.
  • Joey DalPonte (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) followed with two scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and keeping the Pride within striking distance.
  • Both teams were locked in a pitcher's duel early, as neither side was able to break through the first four innings. Walkowiak worked efficiently through the Grand Valley lineup, stranding runners and keeping the game scoreless.
  • Grand Valley State broke the deadlock in the fifth inning, using a walk and a pair of hits to plate the game's first run and take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Lakers added to their lead in the seventh inning, capitalizing on walks and situational hitting. A fielder's choice brought in one run before a sacrifice bunt plated another, extending the advantage to 3-0.
  • Purdue Northwest had limited opportunities offensively but threatened in the seventh and eighth innings with runners reaching base. However, timely double plays and strong pitching from Grand Valley State prevented the Pride from cutting into the deficit.
  • The Pride put a runner on in the ninth inning as Chidsey recorded his second hit of the game but were unable to generate a rally as Grand Valley State closed out the win.
