Baseball Falls in Series Finale at Davenport, 11-5

The Pride baseball team took on Davenport University this Sunday in the final game of a GLIAC conference series where the Pride would fall by a score of 11-5.

The Breakdown
Game 1: L (11-5) - 9 Innings
  • Billy Chidsey (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) led the Pride offensively with a three-run home run in the first inning, finishing with three RBIs. Joey Guiliano (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) added a multi-hit performance with two hits and an RBI, while Gabe Bush (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) and Denham Kozy (Munster, Ind./Munster) each collected two hits as Purdue Northwest totaled 13 hits on the day.
  • Drew Kosteba (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) contributed a hit and scored twice, while Braylon Holland (Hobart, Ind./Andrean) added two hits. Derek Kubek (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) reached base three times with a hit and two walks, and Zach Wright (Munster, Ind./Munster) also recorded a hit as the Pride generated offense throughout the lineup.
  • Joey DalPonte (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) got the start on the mound, allowing three runs over 3.0 innings. Brett Bounds (Morris, Ill./Morris Community) took the loss, surrendering five runs in relief, while Connor Stafford (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) allowed three runs in the fifth inning. Jacob Chajet (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic) closed out the game with 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
  • Purdue Northwest jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Chidsey launched a three-run home run to center field, giving the Pride a 3-0 advantage.
  • Davenport answered in the bottom half of the inning, capitalizing on walks and timely hits to score three runs and tie the game at 3-3.
  • The game remained tied until the fourth inning when Davenport used a pair of extra-base hits to plate two runs and take a 5-3 lead.
  • In the fifth inning, Davenport broke the game open with a six-run frame, taking advantage of multiple hits and a defensive miscue to extend the lead to 11-3.
  • The Pride continued to battle late, scoring twice in the ninth inning as Guiliano delivered an RBI single and Brayden Barrett (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) added an RBI single to cut the deficit to 11-5.
  • Despite the late push, Purdue Northwest was unable to overcome the big fifth inning as Davenport closed out the game.
  • In total, the Pride recorded 13 hits and generated consistent offense but could not recover from Davenport's six-run inning.
Up Next
The Pride will return to action on Thursday, May 7, as they compete in the GLIAC Tournament against Grand Valley State University, with first pitch set for 3:00 PM CT.
