Over the weekend the Purdue University Northwest esports team took part in the Battle for Indiana held at the Butler Esports Park in Indianapolis. PNW took part in Valorant, Rocket League, and League of Legends to compete for a trophy against fellow Indiana universities.
On the opening day of the tournament, the Rocket League team, who were seeded fourth out of six competed. The team started the tournament by facing Purdue Fort Wayne in a best-of-five match and secured a 3-1 victory, advancing to round 2. In the second round, the team faced Ball State University (BSU), the defending champions. Unfortunately, they suffered a 3-0 loss and were relegated to the loser's bracket, where they faced IUPUI and secured a 3-0 victory. The team was then matched up against Purdue West Lafayette and lost 3-1 being sent home from the tournament.
The following day, Valorant, seeded third out of six teams battled for the title. The first match was against host Butler, which was a close 13-11 victory. The team then squared off against Purdue West Lafayette, the same team that eliminated them from the tournament the previous year. The team fought hard but eventually fell to Purdue West Lafayette, sending them to the loser's bracket where they took a convincing victory over Indiana Tech. However, the team's tournament run came to an end after a very close 13-11 match against defending champions Ball State University.
On the final day, League of Legends took the stage, coming in as the 1st seed in the tournament. They began the tournament by taking on Purdue West Lafayete, securing a convincing victory in 27 minutes and advancing into winner's semi-finals. In the next match PNW faced Indiana University. Despite their efforts, they were defeated and sent to the loser's bracket. PNW then faced off against last year's champions, Ball State University. With tension in the air after losing to Indiana University, the team knew they had to win this match at all cost. The match was worthy of being a final; 40 minutes of grueling back and forth action, PNW was about to come out ahead and advance into the finals for a rematch with Indiana University. In order to win and become Battle for Indiana Champions, the league of legends team had to beat Indiana University in two best of 3 series.
The PNW League of Legends team showcased their skill by beating Indiana University in the first best of 3 beating Indiana University in convincing fashion forcing a bracket reset where they would take Indiana Uiversity in another best of 3 to compete for the title. After the bracket reset, PNW stormed through Indiana University again beating them in another best of 3, proving that they were the better team. The League of Legends team secured the Battle for Indiana trophy, dropping only one game throughout the entire tournament.
