We are excited to continue our "Where Are They Now" with Brooklyn "Short" Guenin", who played an incredible career at Purdue Northwest from 2010-2014 where she recorded 1,200 points, 502 rebounds, 477 assists and 170 steals. She graduated with a degree in mathematics with a concentration in business and was just recently inducted into your high school Hall of Fame. We are thankful to have alumni like Brooklyn who come back and share their amazing stories and experiences with our players.

Why did you choose Purdue University Northwest?
Coach Medge came to my high school before my senior season and discussed playing basketball at Purdue Northwest. Because of my academics, I qualified for the Chancellor's Scholarship, which was huge for the financial side of college. This was a great initial incentive to attend PNW, but my visit to the campus is what sold my decision. My two teammates Alex Starr and Amanda Gaskin showed me around campus and I immediately connected with them. I have some great memories on the court, but I also have great memories with my teammates. I loved that we were all in the dorms together. We were able to enjoy each other on and off the court. I graduated in May of 2014 with a BS in Mathematics with a concentration is business.
What is one of your favorite team and personal highlights?
My favorite memories include our trips to Iowa for nationals my junior and senior years. We may not have had the success on the court that we would have liked, but those weeks were a couple of the best from my 4 years. The best team highlight for me was winning both the regular season conference title and the conference tournament title my senior year. We became very competitive and our record got better each year. It was a great accomplishment to be able to cut down the nets and earn our way to Nationals. My personal highlight is probably being recognized as All-American Honorable Mention my senior season. My stats never jumped out on the page, but I believe the honor showed that other coaches noticed my contributions on the court that don't always show up in the numbers. My best game was against the University of Indianapolis. At the time, they were NCAA DII and we were NAIA. It was supposed to be regular season game for them and they expected to run us out of the gym. We shocked them and came out with the win. I had 27 points and was 7-8 from 3.
What have you gone to do after PNW?
After I graduated in May 2014, I married my husband Tyler in August of that year. I taught high school math at my alma mater for two school years and was then hired for my current position as staff accountant for an optometry business, Midwest Eye Consultants. Tyler and I have two little girls, Oakley 2 and Jersey 4 months.
Looking back now, what you would tell our players about life, and what advice would you give them for their time at PNW?
I would encourage the girls to live out Colossians 3:23. "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for man." On the court, in the classroom, and in everyday life, give it all you've got. It's a brief four years, so enjoy it, embrace it, and make the most out of it.
