Box Score Ashland, Ohio – Senior Jacob Lane (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) had a double with four RBI to help lead the Purdue Northwest baseball team to a 9-3 victory in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) series finale with Ashland University (Ohio) Sunday afternoon at Tomassi Stadium in Ashland, Ohio. Freshman Kyle Freel (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) had a great start for the Pride in the finale throwing seven scoreless frames and allowing five hits and three walks with five strikeouts.
Sophomore Hunter Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage) kicked off the game's scoring with a RBI single to left field in the top of the third inning. Later in the frame, Lane came up big with a three-run double to the gap in right centerfield to extend the lead to 4-0. In the bottom of the eighth, the Eagles drew to within a run scoring three runs off a RBI double down the left field line and a two-run double to the gap in right centerfield.
PNW put the exclamation point on the win scoring five runs in the top of the ninth with RBI singles by Lane and senior Mike Mikulich (Hebron, Ind./Hebron) as well as a two-run single by sophomore Alex Batistatos (Hobart, Ind./Hobart). Freel moved his season record to 4-3 with the victory. Freshman Chad Patrick (Hebron, Ind./Hebron) earned his first save of the season throwing the final 1.2 innings and giving up two hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
Purdue Northwest (15-18 overall/7-12 GLIAC) takes a break from conference play to host University of Indianapolis for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 24. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled for a 1 p.m. CT start at Dowling Park in Hammond.
