Pride offense stalls in series finale against Cardinals

HAMMOND, Ind. — With temperatures below freezing, Purdue Northwest's bats went cold in Sunday's setback against Saginaw Valley State at Dowling Park. The visiting Cardinals completed the weekend sweep with an 11-1 victory. The two teams played the final game of the four-game series after completing a suspended game from Saturday.

Senior Jake Soules (Troy, Mich./Troy High School) recorded three of PNW's seven hits and scored the lone run for the Pride. Luke Montgomery (Orland Park, Ill./St. Laurence High School), Tyler Schultz (Hobart, Ind./Hobart), Anthony Fumagalli (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North High School) and Jack Gallagher (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North High School) each had one hit apiece. PNW (10-7, 0-4 GLIAC) only had one runner advance past first base over the final seven innings as the Pride grounded into three double plays.

After the Cardinals opened the game with three runs, the Pride loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first but only had one run to show for it. Ray Hilbrich (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central), who appeared in his 100th career game, lifted a sacrifice fly to left field which plated Soules to make the score 3-1.

SVSU (12-8, 4-0 GLIAC) would tack on another run in the second inning and four more in the third thanks to a three-run double to put the visitors ahead, 8-1. The Cards, who totaled 10 hits, added insurance with one run in the fifth and two in the seventh.

Freshman Bret Matthys (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) (1-1) was charged with the loss in his first home start. The left-hander surrendered four runs (two earned) on three hits and four walks across two frames.

Jack Sielatycki (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) threw 4.1 innings of relief while Eric Beck (Manteno, Ill/Manteno) added two shutout frames on the mound.

SVSU's Tyler McLaren improved to 3-0 after earning the win with six shutout innings of relief work.
