HAMMOND, Ind. — The Purdue Northwest baseball team fell 5-1 to visiting University of Indianapolis in the opening game of Tuesday's non-conference doubleheader at Laborers' Local 41 Field.
Both teams went four innings without a hit as both starting pitchers settled in early, but UIndy (11-14) grabbed the lead when an unearned run crossed in the first to make it 1-0.
PNW (10-8) eventually broke through in the fifth frame with four of the team's five hits, but the Pride could only get one run across to even the score at 1-1. With two outs,
Jack Gallagher (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North High School) hit a sharply hit ball to the left side that bounced off a diving infielder's glove and allowed
Ethan Imlach (Mokena, Ill./Mount Carmel) to score.
Starter
Sam Shively (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka (Taylor)) suffered his first loss and dropped to 2-1 on the year, despite a solid outing on the mound. The right-hander ran into trouble when the first four batters reached in the sixth on a pair of walks and two hits. The Greyhounds would get a sacrifice fly and capitalize on a throwing error to plate four runs during the rally.
Right-hander
Joe Buikema (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame College Prep) tossed a pair of shutout frames in relief after making his team-leading sixth appearance of the mound.
Imlach led the Pride at the dish with a 2-for-3 effort as the sophomore right fielder posted his sixth multi-hit outing of the season. Gallagher,
Alex Gasbarro (New Lenox, Ill./St. Laurence High School) and
Anthony Fumagalli (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North High School) had the other three hits as the Pride outhit the Greyhounds, 5-3.
