Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late lead slips away from Pride Women's Basketball

HAMMOND, Ind. – The Purdue Northwest women's basketball team fell 64-61 to Parkside on Thursday night inside the Fitness & Recreation Center.

PNW dropped to 4-8 (1-4 GLIAC) overall on the season after returning to the floor for the first time in over three weeks. Parkside improved to 6-8 (3-3 GLIAC) on the year and snapped a five-game losing streak.

How it happened: PNW stormed back at the end of the third quarter to get within three points as Abbie McDowell's (Tecumseh, Mich./Tecumseh) trey near the buzzer made it 48-45 Parkside. McDowell kept the hot hand going in the fourth as another three put the Pride ahead 49-48 early in the final period.

Eventually, PNW would reclaim the lead and moved in front by five after a pair of Dash Shaw (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) free throws made it 55-50 PNW with over five minutes remaining. But, Parkside responded with a flurry of threes, knocking down three consecutive treys to climb back in front, 59-55, near the three-minute mark.

The Pride would keep the game within three points down the stretch and had a potential game-tying shot bounce off the rim at the final buzzer.

Shaw led the Pride with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting with three rebounds and two steals. McDowell knocked down the only pair of threes for the Pride on the day and finished with 12 points. In addition, Kennedy Jackson (Carson, Calif./Redondo Union) tied her career-high of 10 points to reach double figures in the scoring column. Molly DeValkenaere (Milwaukee, Wis./Brookfield) chipped in with nine points and five boards, while Kylie Schmidt (Francis Creek, Wis./Mishicot) pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds paired with five points.

Both teams shot above 40 percent from the field. PNW took advantage of its opportunities at the line, shooting 17 for 21 at the charity stripe.

Parkside's Alyssa Nelson led all scorers with 22 points, six rebounds and three assists. Nelson shot 6 for 14 overall from the field and went 7 for 8 at the free-throw line. Hannah Plockelman recorded a double-double effort with 15 points and 10 boards for the Rangers.
