Slow start in third quarter dooms Pride Women's Basketball

HAMMOND, Ind. – Purdue Northwest fell 78-72 to Northwood in Saturday's GLIAC women's basketball showdown in the Fitness & Recreation Center.

PNW moved to 4-9 (1-5 GLIAC) following the setback while NU improved to 8-6 (2-5 GLIAC) on the season.

How it happened: After the teams were tied 34-34 at halftime, the visiting Timberwolves used a 12-2 run out of the break to gain control. Northwood drained four 3-pointers and outscored PNW 24-17 as the lead swelled to as much as 14 in the third quarter.

Turnovers were costly for PNW as Northwood outscored the Pride 25-10 in points off turnovers. The Pride turned the ball over 18 times while the Timberwolves had only 11 turnovers on the day.

The Pride chipped away and made it a four-point game when Kylie Schmidt's (Francis Creek, Wis./Mishicot) baseline jumper cut the deficit to 71-67 with under two minutes remaining. But the Timberwolves were able to close out the game at the free-throw line.

Three PNW players scored 13 points in the contest, including Reagan Courier (Delavan, Wis./Big Foot), Abbie McDowell (Tecumseh, Mich./Tecumseh) and Mercedes Simmons (Crystal Falls, Mich./Forest Park). Kennedy Jackson (Carson, Calif./Redondo Union) chipped in nine points with five assists while Antreese Shelton (Elkhart, Ind./Penn) grabbed a team-high six boards.

PNW held the lead briefly for a possession in the second quarter after back-to-back treys from Courier and McDowell sparked a run. The Pride overcame a seven-point deficit in the period with 6-of-8 (75%) shooting and going 7 for 8 at the line. After trailing 23-16, the Pride led 30-29 midway through the second stanza as the teams stayed within single digits for most of the day.

Northwood's Alana Nelson led four Timberwolves in double figures with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Jayla Strickland added 15 points and eight boards while Makenzie Todd also scored 15 points for the visitors.
