PNW Defeats Lewis in Emphatic Lewis Dome Invitational Finale

O’Kelly went 3-for-3 with two RBI’s at the plate, and May and Blackwell held their own on the mound in PNW’s 5-2 victory Sunday

ROSEMONT, ILL. -- The Purdue Northwest Softball team concluded their stay at the Lewis Dome Invitational on Sunday morning when they faced the host Lewis Flyers. Led by nine PNW hits, including Heather O'Kelly's 3-for-3, the Pride (2-3) outmatched the Flyers (4-4) and left Rosemont with the 5-2 win and two-straight victories after a tough opening weekend to their 2020 season.

O'Kelly was PNW's first base-runner after her single to left field on an 0-2 count, but she ended the inning left on second base. Madison Schultz's second-inning triple to center field with one-on and one-out scored Ashley Bravo from first for the first run of the morning. Crystal Carrillo made it back-to-back RBI's for the Pride when she brought Schultz home on a sacrifice fly down the right-field line.

PNW's next run came in the top of the fifth inning. After Sabryna Stanley singled down the left-field line and advanced to second on a Lewis fielding error, O'Kelly brought her home with a single to center field on the first pitch of the at-bat with two outs. She also advanced to second on a Lewis fielding error, but was once again stranded there.

Bravo picked up an RBI of her own in the top of the sixth when her sacrifice fly to right field scored pinch-runner Jocelyn Gault. Lewis scored their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth, but O'Kelly finished the game's scoring with her sacrifice fly to center field with two-on and one out in the top of the seventh, scoring pinch-runner Brienna Chatman from third.

On the mound, Courtney Blackwell got the start, pitching two innings where she struck out two Flyers before being relieved by Abbie May for four innings. Blackwell then returned to the mound for the final inning to secure the win for the Pride.

Two games in Peoria, Illinois are up next for PNW Softball, beginning on Friday, February 28 against Winona State at 9:30 a.m. (CT). The Pride's second game of the day is against Illinois-Springfield with the first pitch scheduled at 2 p.m. (CT).
