Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Purdue University Northwest Men's Basketball program hit the road for Michigan on Thursday, December 5, to start off the 2019-20 season of GLIAC conference play against the Davenport University Panthers.
The Pride opened up the first half narrowly trailing the Panthers through the first eleven minutes of competition before Davenport found their footing and opened up a six-point lead. It was a shooting foul against No. 24 Jordan Doss at the five-minute mark that swung the Pride a 3-point play and closed Davenport's lead back down to the score of 27-25, followed quickly by the tying layup from No. 1 Xavier Allison. Davenport would reopen the gap in the closing minutes of the half before the final whistle blew, sending PNW into halftime down by five with a score of 37-42 after a final second shot made by No. 2 Gregory Boyle.
At the end of the first half, the Pride had been shooting 38.2% for field goals, 33.3% from behind the 3-point arc and recorded a perfect half with their free throws. Doss led PNW on the scoresheet with 11 recorded points, followed by Boyle and No. 10 Xavier Hallinan both with five points, No. 12 Durante Lee with four points, and Allison and No. 3 Chandler Spring both with three points.
PNW returned to the court for a foul-heavy half of competition with the Panthers, who scored 11 unanswered points before the Pride rallied following a pair of layups from Boyle and Lee. While battling their way against the Davenport defense, Purdue Northwest took full advantage of multiple key turnovers and shots throughout the half. By the final whistle, Davenport's offense had surged ahead and the Pride ended the evening with a loss of 93-74.
"Our effort tonight was nonexistent," said Head Coach Boomer Roberts. "I don't care who we play or where we play. Our teams have always competed harder than our opponents, and tonight was embarrassing. Davenport is good, and we knew we had to play well to get it done. But our expectation is that we flat out compete every single possession, and we failed to do that tonight. We deserved every bit of that butt kicking and I hope it wakes some of our guys up to the level that is needed every day. This is high-level basketball and no one is going to feel sorry for us. We laid down tonight, which is unacceptable and will get fixed."
Purdue Northwest was led on the scoresheet by Boyle with 19 points, five rebounds and two assists. Doss put up 14 points for the Pride with Lee and No. 23 Lukas Vilkovsky each put up six.
The Pride will be back in action on Saturday, December 7 when they take on the Grand Valley State Lakers. Tip-off is set for 2 pm (CT).
