Late Rally Falls Short as Baseball Drops 5-4 Decision at Davenport

The Pride baseball team took on Davenport University this Friday in a GLIAC conference matchup where the Pride would fall by a score of 5-4.

The Breakdown
Game 1: L (5-4) - 9 Innings
  • Owen Winters (Kouts, Ind./Kouts) led the Pride offensively with a 3-for-4 performance, driving in two runs and consistently producing at the plate. Brayden Barrett (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) added two hits, while Drew Kosteba (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) contributed two hits and two RBIs. Denham Kozy (Munster, Ind./Munster) also recorded a multi-hit game with two hits and a run scored as the Pride totaled 12 hits.
  • Billy Chidsey (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) reached base three times with a hit and two walks while scoring a run, and Zach Wright (Munster, Ind./Munster) added a pinch-hit single and later scored. Braylon Holland (Hobart, Ind./Andrean) chipped in with a hit and later came around to score as Purdue Northwest generated offense throughout the lineup.
  • Mitchell Stanton (South Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) got the start on the mound, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits over 5.0 innings while striking out three. Joey DalPonte (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) followed with a scoreless inning of relief, and Ivan Balboa (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) allowed two runs over the final two innings.
  • Davenport struck first in the third inning, using a pair of hits to plate a run and take an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Pride answered in the fourth inning when Denham Kozy (Munster, Ind./Munster) singled and later scored on an RBI single from Owen Winters (Kouts, Ind./Kouts) to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Purdue Northwest took the lead in the fifth inning as Billy Chidsey (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) walked, stole second, and came around to score on an RBI single by Drew Kosteba (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) to make it 2-2 before Davenport responded with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half to regain a 3-2 advantage.
  • After a scoreless sixth inning, Davenport added to its lead in the seventh on a solo home run, extending the score to 4-2.
  • The Pride battled back in the eighth inning as Zach Wright (Munster, Ind./Munster) singled and came around to score on an RBI single from Winters, cutting the deficit to 4-3.
  • Davenport responded again in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to push the lead to 5-3.
  • Purdue Northwest made one final push in the ninth inning, capitalizing on an error and a hit from Barrett before Kosteba delivered an RBI single to bring the Pride within one at 5-4.
  • With the tying run on base and the go-ahead run at the plate, the Pride were unable to complete the comeback as Davenport recorded the final out to secure the win.
  • In total, Purdue Northwest recorded 12 hits, including multiple multi-hit performances, but left 10 runners on base in the narrow loss.
