Softball shuts out UMSL to begin Oasis DII Collegiate Classic

The Purdue Northwest Softball team opened play Friday afternoon Day 1 of the Oasis DII Collegiate Classic with a 1-0 shutout victory over Missouri-St. Louis at the Oasis Sports Complex in Marion, Illinois.

The Basics

  • Records: Purdue Northwest (4-2), Missouri-St. Louis (4-10)
  • Location: Oasis Sports Complex – Marion, Illinois
  • Attendance: 77

The Breakdown

  • Sophomore Kylie Madura (Munster, Ind./Munster) led the Pride offensively with two hits, both hits being doubles, including the go-ahead double.
  • Junior Emma Fair (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) added a hit and scored the game's lone run, while Freshman Jessy Del Toro (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) and Freshman Gracie Jensen (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) each recorded a hit in the victory.
  • Purdue Northwest finished with five hits on the day, while the Tritons were limited to just three.
  • Sophomore Jordyn Roop (Hudson, Ill./University) tossed all seven innings, allowing no runs on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts over 108 pitches.
  • Both teams were locked in a pitcher's duel from the first inning, as neither side managed to push a run across through the first six frames.
  • Roop and UMSL's A. Borowitz traded zeros throughout the afternoon, with Roop working around three walks and scattering three hits to keep the Tritons off the scoreboard.
  • The Pride threatened in multiple innings but were unable to break through early, stranding three runners over the first six innings as Borowitz kept the game scoreless.
  • Roop continued to command the circle, striking out four and inducing steady contact as the Pride defense turned in a clean performance behind her, including a key double play to erase a potential UMSL scoring opportunity.
  • The decisive moment came in the top of the seventh inning. Fair led off and later moved into scoring position before Madura delivered a clutch double to right center. Fair advanced to third on the play and came home on a muffed throw by the second baseman, giving Purdue Northwest a 1-0 lead.
  • With the slim advantage, Roop returned to the circle in the bottom half and shut the door. She retired the Tritons to secure the complete-game shutout and improve to 2-0 on the season.
