Pride softball splits Sunday action against Bulldogs

The Purdue Northwest Softball team split two hard-fought games at home against Ferris State in GLIAC action on Sunday afternoon. The Pride took Game 1 in a shutout, 2-0, and fell just short in Game 2, 6-2.

Game 1
The Breakdown
  • Sophomore Emma Fair (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove)  led the Pride at the plate with two hits and one RBI.
  • Junior Grace Wilson (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) and senior Myah Stuckey (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) each added two hits for Purdue Northwest.
  • Freshman Kylie Madura (Munster, Ind./Munster) chipped in one hit.
  • Freshman Rylan Gick (West Lafayette, Ind./William Henry Harrison) gained the start on the mound for the Pride and tallied another phenomenal outing. She pitched all seven innings allowing only six hits and no runs allowed with four strikeouts to notch her first career shutout win.
  • Abby Meyer and Maddie Gkekas led Ferris State with two hits each.
  • Catherine O'Donohue started in the circle for the Bulldogs pitching all six innings allowing two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
  • The Pride grabbed the early lead scoring a run in the first inning to make it a 1-0 game.
  • Purdue Northwest added their second run off an RBI double from Fair to take a 2-0 advantage.
  • The Pride defense and pitching held strong all game to shut down the Bulldogs offense to tally the shutout win, 2-0, in Game 1.
Game 2
The Breakdown
  • Sophomore Kylie Dugan (Buck Creek, Ind./William Henry Harrison) led the Pride with two hits and one RBI.
  • Fair added one hit and two RBIs.
  • Wilson and Stuckey both chipped in one hit during the game.
  • Junior Hailie Charmat (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) started in the circle for Pride pitching the first two  innings allowing two runs off of one hit.
  • Freshman Abbey Bond (Saint John, Ind./Andrean) came in for relief for Purdue Northwest and pitched the final five innings allowing five hits, four runs with only two earned, and grabbed one strikeout.
  • Brooklyn Verbeek led Ferris State with two hits and two RBIs.
  • Cecilia Bell started on the mound for the Bulldogs pitching all seven innings allowing two runs off five hits with two strikeouts to garner the win.
  • Ferris State took their first lead of the day when they scored four innings in third inning to go up 4-0.
  • The Bulldogs added two more runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 6-0.
  • The Pride were able to grab two runs in the sixth off a two-RBI double from Fair to cut it to 6-2.
  • Purdue Northwest couldn't come up with more offense down the stretch and ultimately fell in Game 2, 6-2.

  • The Pride look to defend home field once again when they host Grand Valley State in GLIAC play on Tuesday, April 15. The doubleheader is set to begin at 2:00 PM CT at Dowling Park in Hammond, Indiana.
