Softball falls short in battle with #7 UIndy; bounces back to defeat Southern Conn. St. in Florida Spring Games

The Purdue Northwest softball team split a pair of highly contested games in Florida Spring Games falling just short to #7 UIndy, 3-2, and then bouncing and coming from behind to defeat Southern Connecticut State to end the day, 10-6.

Game 1 - vs. #7 UIndy - L, 3-2
The Breakdown
  • Senior Kelsi Dillon (Braidwood, Ill./Reed-Custer (Georgian Court)) led the Pride with two hits and one RBI.
  • Sophomore Amanda DeBoer (Dyer, Ind./Illiana Christian) added two hits.
  • Senior's Aubrey Shroyer (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon) and Allison Arnold (Tucson, Ariz./Naperville North) both chipped in one hit.
  • Senior Maddison Roop (Hudson, Ill./University) started on the mound for the Pride and pitched all seven innings recording five strikeouts.
  • Shelby Cook led UIndy with one hit and two RBIs.
  • Kenzee Smith started in the circle for the Greyhounds and pitched a complete game for the win with six strikeouts.
  • UIndy grabbed the early lead in the first inning scoring one run to make it 1-0.
  • Purdue Northwest tied it up 1-1 in the bottom of the first off a Michko groundout RBI.
  • The Pride grabbed the lead in the fourth inning on a Dillon RBI single to make the score 2-1.
  • The Greyhounds regained the lead in sixth off a two RBI triple from Smith to help seal the game in the end, 3-2.

The Breakdown
  • Graduate student Selena Michko (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) led the Pride at the plate with three hits and four RBIs including two doubles.
  • Shroyer also added three hits and three RBIs.
  • Senior Jessica DeBoer (Dyer, Ind./Illiana Christian) and freshman Emma Fair (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) each contributed two hits and one RBI.
  • Freshman Kylie Dugan (Buck Creek, Ind./William Henry Harrison) and junior Myah Stuckey (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) each chipped in two hits during the game.
  • Freshman Hannah Rafferty-Flatter (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) started in the circle for the Pride and pitched the first three innings with one strikeout.
  • Senior Gabby Paliska (Palos Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East (Wisconsin-Green Bay)) came in for Purdue Northwest and pitched the final four innings to earn the victory.
  • Karley Austin led SCSU with two hits and two RBIs.
  • Ashley Lewis started on the mound for the Owls pitching the first four innings allowing four runs.
  • The Pride grabbed the early lead scoring two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead.
  • SCSU scored their first run in the first to cut their deficit to 2-1.
  • The Owls took the lead in the second inning notching two runs to make it 3-2.
  • SCSU grabbed another run in the third inning to extend their lead to 4-2.
  • Purdue Northwest tied it up 4-4 in the four inning off of RBI hits from Shroyer and Michko.
  • The Owls regained the lead scoring two runs in the fourth to make the score 6-4.
  • The Pride bounced back and lit up the fifth inning scoring six runs to take the lead 10-6.
  • Purdue Northwest would hold on in the end for the win, 10-6.
  • The Pride finished the contest with 16 hits.
