Women's Basketball celebrates Play4Kay game with big win vs. Saginaw Valley State

The Purdue Northwest Women's Basketball Team celebrated it's Play4Game with a huge win against Saginaw Valley State in GLIAC action on Thursday evening, 66-63. With the win the Pride secured a spot in the GLIAC Tournament.

Play4Game Celebration: Purdue Northwest and the Kay Yow Fund celebrated their Play4Kay game as they honored five special survivors for their starting line-up. The five Play4Kay starters were Tabby Stills, Jeannette Jennings, Carolyn De St. Jean, Suzanne Kaegebein, and Cindy Bass. Purdue Northwest Athletics continue to support those fighting cancer.

Inside The Numbers
  • Junior Dash Shaw (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) led the Pride with 25 points and also snatched six steals. With those 25 points, Shaw eclipsed 500 points on the season.
  • Junior Mercedes Simmons (Crystal Falls, Mich./Forest Park) added 13 points and grabbed five boards.
  • Junior Tadriana Heard (Justice, Ill./Argo) chipped in eight points.
  • As a team, the Pride finished the game shooting 19-of-48 (39.6%) from the floor and went 1-of-7 (14.3%) from behind the arc.
  • Kaitlyn Zarychi led Saginaw Valley State with a game-high 28 points.
  • As a team, the Cardinals went 19-of-51(37.3%) from the field and shot 4-of-19 (21.1%) from deep.
The Breakdown
  • Both teams battled hard to start the game and saw Saginaw Valley State take a 18-15 lead after the first period.
  • The Cardinals gained momentum in the second period and used that to take a 38-30 advantage into halftime.
  • Purdue Northwest started the second half fast with a 11-2 run to take a 41-40 lead with six minutes remaining in the third.
  • The teams battled back-and-forth for the rest of the third period and saw the Pride with a 54-50 advantage heading into the all important fourth period.
  • The Pride continued to hold an advantage for most of the fourth period but the Cardinals did not go quietly and continued to chip away their deficit.
  • With the score 66-63 in favor of the Pride, Saginaw Valley State had one final chance to tie the game but the Purdue Northwest defense held tough in the end to seal the important victory.
  • The Pride held an advantage in points off turnovers, 25-12.
  • Purdue Northwest held a slight edge in points in the paint, 34-28.
  • Both teams each recorded 28 rebounds.
