PARK FOREST, Ill. – Paul Hawes' (Naples, Fla.) third-set tiebreaker victory in single flight No.-6 action proved to be the only match the Purdue Northwest men's tennis team won against ninth-ranked Wayne State in GLIAC tennis action at the Park Forest Tennis Club.
The victory for Hawes over Wayne State's Ryan Okonski was a 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (7-4) thriller for the Pride and was Hawes' first individual match victory since Feb. 13, 2022, when he also won the No. 6-singles battle against his opponent from Hillsdale College. The individual win against Hillsdale also proved to be the Pride's only team-scoring victory in that match as well.
PNW (2-8, 0-1 GLIAC) came close to taking the doubles point against Wayne State (13-4, 1-0 GLIAC) with the teams of
Luca Kirchhoff (Wiesbaden, Germany) and
Bjorgvin Juliusson (Reykjavik, Iceland) as well as
Marcos Jose Diaz Gutierrez (Guadalajara, Spain) and
Luis Alvear (Manacor, Balearic Islands, Spain) fought hard in their respective matches before falling victim to 6-4 losses each.
At No. 1 Singles, PNW's Miguel Flores fell short but claimed three sets from 29th-ranked Dom Spicer in a 6-1, 6-2 decision. Flores and doubles partner
Levent Evyapan (Istanbul, Turkey) also matched up against the 11th-ranked duo in the nation, falling 6-2 against WSU's Daniel Grey and Cedric Drenth.
