HAMMOND. Ind. – Purdue Northwest came up short in a back-and-forth GLIAC contest against Lake Superior State, 62-56, inside the Fitness & Recreation Center. The matchup was postponed to Friday afternoon after Thursday's winter storm in Northwest Indiana.
PNW fell to 8-16 (5-12 GLIAC) after the setback, and with two games remaining, the Pride are on the outside looking in for the eighth and final qualifying spot for the GLIAC Tournament. LSSU improved to 4-17 (3-12 GLIAC) and notched its first conference road win.
Dash Shaw (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) led the Pride with 21 points – her eighth outing this season with 20 or more. The sophomore knocked down a pair of threes, along with five rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Kennedy Jackson (Carson, Calif./Redondo Union) chipped in with nine points while
Mercedes Simmons (Crystal Falls, Mich./Forest Park) and
Reagan Courier (Delavan, Wis./Big Foot) each added eight.
Antreese Shelton (Elkhart, Ind./Penn) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and
Molly DeValkenaere (Milwaukee, Wis./Brookfield) pulled down six boards.
How it happened: PNW carried a 47-42 lead into the fourth quarter after going up by as much as eight points in the third. Jackson willed the Pride into the lead, capping the third period with a driving and-one layup to finish with seven of her nine points in the frame.
However, the visiting Lakers would outscore the Pride 20-9 in the fourth period to complete the comeback. PNW shot just 3 for 18 (16.7%) from the field in the final quarter and only got to the foul line twice. Meanwhile, the Lakers didn't shoot it well from the field either but went 9 for 14 from the line.
A pair of Shaw free throws tied the score at 51-51 with just over two minutes left, but LSSU responded by going on a key 9-0 scoring run to put the game out of reach.
LSSU's Makenzie Bray scored 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting to lead the Lakers. Mattison Rayman grabbed a game-high 20 rebounds.
