KENOSHA, Wis. – Playing its third road game in five days, the Purdue Northwest women's basketball team came up short Monday night against Parkside, 69-52, inside De Simone Arena.
PNW fell to 6-13 overall and 3-9 in conference play following the loss.
How it happened: Parkside jumped out to a 17-10 lead after the first quarter as the Pride got off to a slow start on the offensive end.
Dash Shaw (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) came off the bench midway through the frame and provided a spark with a pair of baskets to even the score at 9-9.
Then, Shaw led off the second period with back-to-back threes which sliced the seven-point deficit to make it a one-possession game.
Antreese Shelton's (Elkhart, Ind./Penn) layup made it 19-18 Parkside with eight minutes until halftime.
But the host Rangers (9-11, 6-6 GLIAC) would pull back ahead with an 11-0 run in the second quarter to fend off the Pride. Parkside took a 33-22 advantage into the halftime break as Shaw accounted for 12 points over the opening 20 minutes for the Pride.
PNW tried to climb back in the third quarter and cut Parkside's lead down to seven on three occasions, but that was as close as the Pride could get. PNW was unable to gain a lead the entire contest. Shaw and Shelton both scored early in the fourth quarter to help make it a nine-point deficit, 54-49, but the Rangers closed it out down the stretch.
Shaw led the way with 15 points and five rebounds, while Shelton went a perfect 5-for-5 shooting from the field with 12 points, four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal.
Reagan Courier (Delavan, Wis./Big Foot) was also efficient offensively with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
PNW's struggles at the free-throw line proved costly — the Pride made just 5 of 14 (35.7%) attempts.
Parkside's Alyssa Nelson led all scorers with 22 points while Hannah Plockelman finished a rebound shy of a double-double with 16 points and nine boards.
