Freshman
Emma Carter (Plainfield, Ill.) scored the first PNW goal of the season in her collegiate debut Thursday, but the Pride couldn't hang on to its lead against Illinois Springfield as a late goal from the visitors set up a 1-1 draw at Dowling Park.
Â
Carter put PNW ahead 1-0 in the 27th minute when she timed a perfect strike off the bounce from 20 yards out. She looked to score after a poor touch by a UIS defender and sent a shot near the upper left of the box to the back post over the keeper's head. Carter started the play sequence leading up to the goal with a corner kick. She's the second Pride women's soccer player to record her first collegiate goal against UIS in three years. Teammate
Sydney Hanson (Alma, Mich.) also did it nearly three years ago to the date at Dowling Park.
Â
The Pride maintained the lead and looked to be in control for a good portion of the match until the Prairie Stars turned up the pressure late. UIS eventually found success with the equalizer in the 86th minute – while out-shooting the Pride overall 10-6 in shots on goal. Sierra Cenek scored the lone goal for the visitors.
Â
With daylight fading, the referee directed a 15-minute overtime period to be played but called the game with just over three minutes remaining due to decreased visibility as nightfall settled in.
Â
PNW nearly stormed the field when Hanson tapped home a would-be game-winner during the OT period, but the play was erased due to an offside flag.
Â
Junior goalkeeper
Bridget Grady (Frankfort, Ill.) registered nine saves in net for the Pride.
Â
Carter led PNW with four shots and sophomore
Lauryn Tillmon (Plainfield, Ill.) recorded three.
