PARK FOREST, Ill. – Purdue Northwest men's tennis remained unbeaten in GLIAC play with a 5-2 win over Northwood Saturday at the Park Forest Tennis Club.
PNW improved to 6-3 overall and 3-0 against league opponents following the victory – which came after a two-week layoff. The Pride looked strong after their previous two scheduled matches at Ashland and Wayne State were postponed.
DOUBLES
PNW swept all three doubles flights for the second straight match.
Miguel Agustin Flores Cepeda and
Levent Evyapan claimed No. 1 Doubles while
Leon Kah and
Luca Kirchhoff took home No. 2 Doubles. Both of those matches were decided by a 7-5 score, while both teams improved to 4-5 in dual matches.
In addition,
Paul Hawes and
Jonas Franssen won at No. 3 Doubles by a 6-3 ledger.
SINGLES
The Pride sealed the match with victories at No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 Singles.
Kah improved to 8-1 with his sixth consecutive win in the second flight. Kah pulled out a 7-3 tiebreaker in the first set over Northwood's Ben Brandherm, before winning the second set 6-4.
Kirchhoff won 6-2 and 7-5 over Mathis Violet at No. 3 Singles for his third straight win. The sophomore improved to 6-3 overall in dual matches.
At No. 5 Singles,
Marcos Jose Diaz Gutierrez also recorded his third straight victory in dual match play. He defeated David Sedlar in three sets: 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Diaz ran his season record to 6-3 in singles action.
Franssen earned his first GLIAC win in singles play with a solid outing. He won 6-0, 6-1 against NU's Chad Barton.
Flores and Evyapan played close matches at the No.1 and No. 4 spots. Flores fell 6-4, 6-4 to Leon Grundstrom.
Then, Evyapan and NU's Tony Henrio traded blows in a competitive match as they split the first two sets in tiebreakers. Evyapan took the first set 7-5 in the tiebreaker while Henrio won 7-4 in the second tiebreaker. Unfortunately, it was Henrio who came out on top in the 10-point tiebreaker in the deciding set.
