HAMMOND, Ind. – Purdue Northwest rallied to defeat Davenport 4-3 in Wednesday's GLIAC softball action at Dowling Park. The second game of the doubleheader was postponed due to weather before the first pitch.
With the victory, PNW improved to 10-20 (7-12 GLIAC) on the season while Davenport dropped to 19-18 (15-10 GLIAC).
Jessica Weaver gave a complete-game effort in the circle to earn her third win for the Pride. The right-hander struck out six and allowed three earned runs on seven hits. Weaver delivered in the clutch and stranded a pair of runners in the final inning while facing the heart of the Panther lineup.
Davenport took a 2-0 lead on Lindsay Goodman's home run and the Panthers held on to that advantage until the fourth. PNW recorded two hits in each of the first three innings but stranded both runners in each frame.
PNW got on the board in the fourth as
Sabryna Stanley produced a sacrifice fly to trim Davenport's lead to one, 2-1.
Then, the Pride finally got the timely hit.
With the score tied and the bases loaded in the fifth,
Kara Aloisio drove in the go-ahead runs on a two-out double to the fence in right center. It was the junior's second double of the season.
Briana Poehler tied the game with an RBI double earlier in the inning and then
Madison Schultz and
Allison Arnold reached safely before Aloisio's clutch hit.
Davenport added a run in the sixth, but PNW held on in the final frame to snap its four-game skid.
Poehler continued her recent tear at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI double. In the past nine games, she's hitting .424 with five doubles while producing 11 RBIs. Schultz also doubled and was hit by a pitch to go 2-for-2. She has reached safely in 11 straight games.
DU's Emma Miller (9-7) took the loss in the circle, tossing 4.2 innings while surrendering eight hits and three earned runs.
