PARK FOREST, Ill. – Purdue Northwest improved to 2-1 in conference play following Friday's 5-2 home win over Saginaw Valley State at the Park Forest Tennis Club.
PNW grabbed the all-important doubles point and the Pride logged victories at No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
DOUBLES
Sienna Lopez and
Lena Van Bergen knocked off SVSU's Sara Neves and Chelsea Dzenga at the top doubles flight, 6-2. PNW clinched the point and early 1-0 lead with the key victory in the second flight – a 6-3 triumph recorded by the duo of
Patricia Dizon and
Nicole Uzcategui.
SINGLES
Lopez cruised at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, and a well-earned victory by
Julia Yanes-Barrera at No. 6 singles kept the Pride in front. Julia defeated her opponent by final scores of 6-4, 6-3.
Then, Dizon secured the match victory for the Pride by outlasting SVSU's Dzenga in the deciding set at No. 3 singles, 6-4. Patricia preserved and came back from a 6-1 defeat in the first to even the matchup with a 6-3 win in the second game.
Carolina Yepez also pulled out a hard-fought victory in three sets at No. 5 singles. After a narrow 7-5 setback, Yepez responded nicely with 6-4 and 6-3 wins to overcome the early adversity.
Van Bergen and Uzcategui each fell 6-4 in the second set of singles play to nearly force a deciding frame at the No. 2 and No. 4 flights.
