PARK FOREST, Ill. – The Purdue Northwest men's and women's tennis teams split a Saturday afternoon matinee with Michigan Tech at the Park Forest Tennis Club. The men's tennis team (5-3, 2-0 GLIAC) won their match 6-1 over the Huskies, but the women's team (4-5, 1-1 GLIAC) narrowly lost 4-3.
PNW needed just one doubles flight victory to take the doubles point as Michigan Tech only traveled with five participants.
Miguel Agustin Flores Cepeda and
Levent Evyapan came through for head coach
Lucian Tabic with a 6-4 victory over Siddhesh Mahadeshwar and Eli Pinnoo in No. 1-doubles flight action.
Flores Cepeda and Evyapan improved to 3-5 taking on stiff competition in the top doubles flight throughout the season. Flores Cepeda, Evyapan,
Leon Kah and
Luca Kirchhoff took their respective singles flights in straight sets.
Flores Cepeda (3-4) downed Nikolai Prosjankyov Gonzalez 7-5, 6-0 in No.1-singles while Evyapan (3-4) defeated Mahadeshwar 7-6 (3), 6-4 in the No. 4-singles flight.
Kah improved his individual record to an impressive 6-1 needing little effort to dismantle Ricardo Nunez Cuesta 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2-singles.
Kirchhoff (4-3) jumped above a .500-winning percentage after breezing past Pinnoo 6-1, 6-4.
The PNW women's tennis team got out to a 2-0 lead before their match started. Michigan Tech only brought four participants so that meant the Pride were awarded team points in singles action for flights No. 5 and No. 6.
The Pride took a 3-0 lead by taking the doubles point thanks to a 6-4 victory by
Lena Van Bergen and
Sienna Lopez victory over Lauren Opalewski and Ivona Gorgioski at the No. 1-doubles flight and a no contest at No. 3-doubles.
One singles win in flights 1-4 would have given PNW a team victory, but the Huskies edged the Pride for the win.
