HAMMOND, Ind. – Savaya Brockington exploded for a career-high 37 points at the Fitness & Recreation Center Saturday as the Purdue Northwest women's basketball team defeated Wayne State, 81-64.
Brockington is the second Pride player in the team's D2 era with a 30-point outing. The sophomore from Indianapolis made a career-high 15 field goals (15-26) and tied her career-high on 5-of-8 shooting from three-point range. She also had five boards and five assists. Teammate
Danielle Nennig scored 33 points two years ago which also came at home against Wayne State.
With the win, PNW improved to 3-8 on the season and snapped a five-game losing streak. The win also marked the second-highest margin of victory for PNW against a GLIAC opponent since joining the league in 2017.
Molly DeValkenaere caught fire from beyond the arc with a career-high four treys and the senior logged her second double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Anjel Galbraith also poured in double figures with 14 points and team-high seven assists.
WSU (5-6) grabbed the first lead and led by as much as five, but PNW countered with an 11-2 run to take control of the game. The Warriors last led in the contest with 1:17 in the first quarter before the Pride ended the period ahead 21-18. Brockington had 12 of the team's 21 points in the opening period.
PNW led 35-31 at halftime after shooting 54 percent with only three turnovers in the first half.
DeValkenaere and Brockington drained three consecutive 3-pointers to open the third quarter as the Pride cruised in the second half.
WSU's Tori Perez trimmed the Pride lead with an old-fashioned three-point play to make the score 46-41 midway through the third. Perez led the Warriors with 26 points and nine boards on the day.
However, Brockington was unguardable as she knocked down back-to-back three's to extend the lead.
The Warriors pulled to within seven in the fourth quarter but the Pride finished strong and left zero doubt by outscoring the visitors 16-6 over the final seven minutes of action.
An outstanding effort led to PNW recording season-best totals in points (81), field goals made (33), three's (10), field-goal percentage (.550), three-point field-goal percentage (.500), assists (18) and turnovers (6).
