Women's Basketball comes up short in overtime

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Purdue Northwest women's basketball team fell in overtime 61-56 to Wayne State Friday afternoon at the Fitness & Recreation Center.

PNW dropped to 2-8 on the season following the setback and will look to snap a five-game slide in tomorrow's rematch against WSU (5-5). Six of the Prides eight losses this season have been by single digits.

Friday's game was evenly-matched, featuring eight lead changes and neither team leading by more than six the entire contest.

Brittany Barnard led PNW with nine points and seven rebounds as nine different Pride players scored in the contest. Molly DeValkenaere, Savaya Brockington and Mercedes Simmons each recorded eight points.

PNW shot 40 percent overall while WSU made 37 percent from the field, but the Warriors took advantage of more opportunities at the line, going 12 of 16, while the Pride attempted only five free throws total.

PNW gained its largest lead of the game in the fourth quarter when Kennedy Jackson's fastbreak layup put the Pride ahead 51-45 with 5:14 remaining.

The Pride had entered the fourth with a one-point advantage and made 7 of 8 shots to begin the final period of regulation. However, the Black & Gold went cold the rest of the way, making just 1 of its final 10 shot attempts in the fourth quarter and overtime combined.

The two teams went to the extra period knotted up at 53-53, but Wayne State hit a three on the opening possession and held on.

WSU's Kate Sherwood led three Warriors in double digits with 15 points.
