MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan used a 20-10 fourth quarter on Friday to pull away from the Purdue Northwest women's basketball team in a 73-61 Wildcats win at the Physical Education and Instructional Facility (PEIF).
PNW (4-13, 4-13 GLIAC) was paced by a 21-point, 7-rebound performance by sophomore guard Savayah Brockington.
The game was close throughout the first three quarters with neither team being able to separate themselves from the other.
NMU led by as many as seven at 15-8 with 3:11 left in the first quarter, but the Pride were able to claw back in to tie the game at 18-18 on a
Dash Shaw 3-point field goal with 34 seconds to go in the opening stanza.
Makaylee Kuhn's jumper as time expired on the period would give the Wildcats (9-8, 9-8 GLIAC) a 20-18 lead.
PNW used a 12-2 run early in the second quarter for a 30-23 lead with
Molly DeValkenaere collecting five of her eight points during that stretch.
The Pride notched just a single point over the final four minutes of the second quarter, as NMU closed out the half with an 11-3 spurt to go up 34-33, thanks to eight points from Kuhn, who would eventually tally a game-high 34.
NMU looked to pull away after taking a 49-43 lead with 3:21 remaining in the third quarter, but PNW would get two three-point plays from
Anjel Galbraith with the second tying the score at 51-51.
A 5:33 scoring drought in the fourth quarter would spell doom for the Pride as NMU took a commanding 69-55 lead that PNW could not overcome.
PNW did a better job of taking care of the ball and pouncing on offensive rebounds in the loss. The Pride gave up just seven turnovers while forcing NMU into 10 of their own and hauling in seven offensive rebounds.
