PNW's fourth quarter drought spoils regular season finale

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Purdue Northwest couldn't hold on to a third-quarter lead in a game that featured 15 lead changes, as the Pride fell 65-55 to Northern Michigan in Saturday's regular-season finale.

PNW wraps up the shortened-season with a 4-14 record. The Pride will wait to find out its opponent for Tuesday's opening round of the GLIAC Tournament. NMU finished at 10-8 overall.

Savaya Brockington scored 16 points with five rebounds and a season-high five assists to lead the Pride. She finished the regular season averaging a team-best 15.7 points per game.

Brockington's 3-pointer near the four-minute mark of the third quarter put PNW ahead 42-39.

The Pride clung to the lead as a jumper by Ce'Niyah Hampton made it 44-43 at the 2:49 mark.

NMU led by only a point entering the fourth quarter, 45-44, but the Wildcats opened the final stanza with a 6-0 run and the lead swelled to nine. PNW went nearly five minutes without a made field goal.

Finally, PNW put together a short run to pull within three on a Mercedes Simmons layup, which trimmed the deficit to 55-52 with 4:19 remaining.

But it was little too late for the Pride who were outscored 20-11 after shooting just 25 percent in the final quarter.

Notably, the Pride made just one three-point field goal in the second half after catching fire from deep in the first half, going 5 of 9 (56%) from beyond the arc.

Four consecutive treys by Brockington, Danielle Nennig, Hampton and Brittany Barnard erased a five-point deficit in the second quarter and put PNW ahead by four at the media timeout, 29-25. The Pride led by four with under two minutes remaining until halftime, but the Wildcats closed on a quick run to claim a 32-31 advantage at the break.

Hampton finished with a career-high nine points while Simmons reached double figures with 10. Molly DeValkenare grabbed a team-best six rebounds on the day.

NMU's Makaylee Kuhn did all the scoring for the Wildcats, finishing with 39 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the field and 16-of-19 shooting at the free-throw line. No other player had more than eight points for the hosts.

PNW's bench outscored NMU 22-10 and the Pride had fewer turnovers with 13 to NMU's 15.
