Late rally not enough as PNW falls to Parkside, 72-69; Brockington nets 36

HAMMOND, Ind. – Savaya Brockington scored 36 points but it wasn't enough as Purdue Northwest fell 72-69 to Parkside on Tuesday night inside the Fitness & Recreation Center.

PNW (3-11, 3-11 GLIAC) suffered its seventh loss by single digits in a back-and-forth contest. The Pride made a final run at the end of the game, nearly erasing a 16-point deficit with five threes in the final 1:48 of regulation.

Brockington buried a career-best six threes and finished one point shy of her career high, which was set earlier this season in a home win over Wayne State. The sophomore guard outdueled Parkside's Alyssa Nelson who recorded 35 points on 13-of-18 shooting. Brockington finished 14 of 26 (54%) from the field overall and 6 for 11 (55%) from beyond the arc.

After a slow start and facing an early 11-point deficit, PNW responded with a great energy in the second quarter and outscored Parkside, 21-8. The Pride shot over 60 percent in the second stanza and utilized a 19-6 run, capped by pair of free throws by Mercedes Simmons to claim a two-point lead at halftime, 32-30. Nelson only played two minutes for the Rangers in the second quarter due to foul trouble.

Molly DeValkenaere put the Pride up five on a layup with 7:38 in the third quarter, but the Rangers stole the momentum by closing the period on an 18-6 run and the visitors led by seven entering the fourth.

Parkside remained in control for the majority of the final frame until the late flurry of PNW threes. The Pride's last lead on the night was 42-41 following a Brockington layup midway through the third.

Galbraith started the rain parade in the final minute with her first of two threes on the night. She finished with 13 points, career-high eight rebounds and six assists. Danielle Nennig chipped in with seven boards and six points.

Parkside's Hannah Plockelman posted a double-double effort with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Both teams shot 43 percent overall from the field, but the Pride missed six free throws that came back to haunt (11-17).
