Women's Basketball tops Ferris State in double OT, 63-60

HAMMOND, Ind. -- Danielle Nennig scored a season-high 24 points to help lead Purdue Northwest past Ferris State 63-60 in double overtime Friday night at the Fitness and Recreation Center.

PNW improved to 4-11 on the season and snapped a three-game losing streak with the home victory. It was the program's first win over Ferris State, who dropped to 5-10. It was also the second time in two years that these teams went to overtime, as PNW fell to the Bulldogs 77-70 in an extra period last season on the road.

The last time the Pride played two overtimes happened in the team's first season of NCAA Division II competition in 2017 -- an 86-75 home win over Davenport.

Nennig finished 5 of 8 from three-point range and 7 for 8 at the free-throw line to lead the Pride. She also grabbed six boards including a pair on the offensive glass and she recorded two blocks.

Other contributors included Savaya Brockington with 19 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Anjel Galbraith posted 12 points, five boards, three assists and three steals, while Antreese Shelton chipped in with seven boards, four points and three blocks.

Ferris State led for majority of the night, despite nine lead changes and seven ties. The Bulldogs jumped ahead 20-12 after a strong run to close the first quarter and FSU led 33-27 at halftime.

The largest advantage of the game was recorded in the second quarter when FSU went up 11 at the 6:23 mark. But, a late PNW first-half run was capped by Molly DeValkenaere's and-one and that brought the Pride to within four points, and neither team led by double digits at any point the rest of the night as the Pride's largest lead was four.

PNW's stingy defense kept the Bulldogs in check the rest of the game by limiting the visitors to single digits in each of the third and fourth quarters, and both overtime periods.

A Brockington three at the 6:49 mark made it 35-33 in the third and gave PNW its first lead since holding an early 12-11 advantage. From then on, baskets were hard to come by as both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net and ended regulation tied at 49-49.

A late PNW rally was key in forcing the overtime period after FSU led by five at the fourth quarter media timeout, 47-42. The Pride then mounted a 7-0 run, ending on a clutch three from the senior Nennig, with just over a minute left to put PNW in the lead. The Bulldogs' Kadyn Blanchard tied it with a jumper in the paint with 47 seconds left in regulation.

In the overtime frames, Nennig and Galbraith each scored five points to help the Pride outscore the Bulldogs, 14-11. PNW made a combined 7 of 10 free throws in the extra periods while FSU did not attempt a free throw.

Brockington gave PNW a little breathing room in the second overtime as her jumper with under three minutes left put the Pride ahead by four. FSU would hit a three to slice the deficit to one, but Nennig stepped up with a pair of free throws to keep the Pride in front.

Blanchard led four FSU players scoring in double figures with 16 points.

The Bulldogs outshot the Pride overall on the night 38 percent to 32 percent, but PNW shot at a better clip from beyond the arc with nine threes.
