PNW suffers 73-57 road defeat; Brockington & Galbraith score double digits

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Purdue Northwest women's basketball team closed out the weekend road trip with a 73-57 defeat to Ashland on Saturday.

Savaya Brockington led the Pride with 18 points, seven rebounds, and three assists while Anjel Galbraith scored 15 points and made four 3-pointers. Mercedes Simmons chipped in with nine points and five boards.

PNW (3-10, 3-10 GLIAC) jumped out front early on a Brockington three, and then Galbraith put the Pride in front 8-7 on another trey as the two teams began trading baskets.

The Pride started 4 of 7 from the field in the first quarter as a bucket by Kennedy Jackson tied the game at 11-11 following the media timeout. However, PNW would go scoreless for the final 2:40 and trailed 21-15 heading to the second period.

AU (8-5, 8-5 GLIAC) went up double digits by scoring on three consecutive possessions to start the second quarter, and PNW struggled to climb out of the hole the rest of the way.

PNW clawed back to get within four late in the second period as a Brockington jumper in the lane made it 35-31, but the Eagles were able to tack on a pair of baskets before the halftime buzzer to go up eight at the break, 39-31.

The Eagles went 13 for 14 at the free-throw line combined over the first and second quarters, while the Pride only went to the line twice.

In the third quarter, Galbraith knocked down her third three and trimmed the deficit to seven, 41-34, near the eight-minute mark. The sophomore guard drained her fourth trey to cut the Eagles' lead back down again to single digits in the fourth quarter, which made the score 64-55 with 4:49 remaining, but that was as close as the Pride would get.

AU's Karlee Pireu led the Eagles with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Pireu combined with Annie Roshak to score 51 of the team's 73 points.
