SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — The Purdue Northwest women's basketball team fell 68-58 to Lake Superior State inside the James Norris Center on Saturday.
PNW dropped to 2-5 on the season and 0-2 in conference play, while LSSU moved to 2-4 and picked up its first league win of the season.
STAT LEADERS
- Savaya Brockington (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and Anjel Galbraith (Vallejo, Calif./Salesian College Prep) each scored 12 points to lead PNW
- Brockington grabbed seven rebounds while Galbraith tallied seven assists
- Molly DeValkenaere (Milwaukee, Wis./Brookfield) chipped in with nine points while Mercedes Simmons (Crystal Falls, Mich./Forest Park) had eight off the bench
How it happened: PNW overcame a slow start and an 11-piont deficit to grab its first lead of the game late in the second quarter. The Pride utilized an impressive 15-1 run as
Dash Shaw's (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) layup put PNW ahead 27-23 with two-and-a-half minutes until halftime. But, the Lakers would get a late bucket to regain the lead at the break, 30-29, and stayed out in front the rest of the way.
PNW cut the deficit to one when a Galbraith 3-pointer midway through the third period made the score 36-35. However, the Lakers closed the third on a 10-4 run and the hosts were able to maintain its distance in the final frame.
DeValkenaere's three-point play with 5:17 left in the game trimmed the Lakers' lead back to four, 52-48, as the Pride pushed for a late comeback, but that would be as close as they could get down the stretch.
PNW shot 35% overall from the field and 33% from three-point range while making 9 of 11 attempts at the free-throw line. The Pride forced 24 Laker turnovers, but LSSU took advantage at the line by making 20 of 25 attempts while shooting 54% overall in the game.
LSSU's Margot Woughter led all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting while going 7 for 7 on free throws. The Lakers had three players reach double digits in the scoring column.
