Pride stumble in road clash with Lakers

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — The Purdue Northwest men's basketball team fell 93-81 Saturday at Lake Superior State.

PNW dropped to 3-6 (0-2 GLIAC) overall while LSSU improved to 5-1 (1-1 GLIAC) on the season.

HEAD COACH BOOMER ROBERTS:
"This was a road trip that should cause all of us to do some soul searching. We weren't up to the standard we have for ourselves, that the previous guys have established over the past three years.

The schedule doesn't get easier from here and we've got to be better. We will be."

STAT LEADERS
  • Anthony Barnard (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) led the way with 16 points and filled the stat sheet with seven boards, three assists, three steals and a block
  • Caleb Zurliene (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei) logged his first collegiate double-double effort with 10 points and 10 rebounds
  • Mikell Cooper (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech) had 15 points and team-high six assists
  • Jyrus Freels (Evansville, Ind./Francis Joseph Reitz) scored in double figures for the fifth straight game with 10 points
How it happened: The Pride led by as much as five in the first half after a pair of free throws by Cooper made the score 27-22 with just over eight minutes until halftime.

LSSU responded with a 13-1 run but Gregory Boyle's (Chicago, Ill./Phoenix Military Academy) three cut the deficit to only four points near the five-minute mark. The Lakers used another big run near the end of the half to take a 55-45 lead into the break.

However, the Pride would rally in the second period to get back within two, when a layup from Cooper and seven consecutive points from Barnard sliced the Laker lead to 56-54 at the 17:41 mark. PNW was unable to regain the lead as the host Lakers continued to make shots.

LSSU drained 12 threes on the day and shot nearly 50% overall from the field, while PNW made just six threes on 22 attempts. Malek Adams led five Lakers in double figures with 26 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three-point range.
