PNW Women's Basketball suffers road defeat in league opener

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Purdue Northwest women's basketball team suffered a 67-57 setback to Ferris State in the league opener for both squads Thursday night at Big Rapids High School.

PNW moved to 2-4 (0-1 GLIAC) overall after dropping its third straight decision. The host Bulldogs won their sixth straight game, improving to 7-1 (1-0 GLIAC) on the year.

STAT LEADERS
  • Junior guard Anjel Galbraith (Vallejo, Calif./Salesian College Prep) led the Pride with 15 points for her third double-digit performance of the season
  • Senior forward Molly DeValkenaere (Milwaukee, Wis./Brookfield) pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and scored nine points on 4-of-5 shooting
  • Junior guard Savaya Brockington (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) handed out a team-high four assists with five boards and eight points
How it happened: PNW trailed by five, 50-45, entering the final quarter after outscoring FSU in the third period. However, the Bulldogs opened the fourth with a 10-2 run and held the Pride scoreless for nearly five minutes. The Bulldogs would go up by as much as 13 with a 60-47 lead midway through the period, and the Pride couldn't climb back. Layups from Galbraith, Brockington and Abbie McDowell (Tecumseh, Mich./Tecumseh) cut the deficit to seven with two minutes remaining, but that was as close as the Pride would get.

Both teams shot 40% overall from the floor with FSU holding a 39-35 edge on the glass. The Bulldogs registered a 13-4 advantage in second-chance points and forced 18 PNW turnovers. The Pride outscored the Bulldogs 17-11 in bench scoring.

FSU's Adrienne Anderson led all scorers with 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the free-throw line. Two others reached double figures in the scoring column for the Bulldogs, including Chloe Idoni with 13 points and Mallory McCartney with 10.
