Furious comeback falls short for women's hoops at Parkside

KENOSHA, Wis. – On Tuesday night, the Purdue Northwest women's basketball team trekked north to oppose another Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) opponent: the Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside.

After trailing by 13 late in the fourth quarter, the Pride (2-5, 2-5 GLIAC) mounted an impressive comeback, holding Parkside scoreless for over three minutes and tying the game on a basket from sophomore guard Savaya Brockington with just six seconds left to play. However, the Rangers (3-4, 3-4 GLIAC) were able to hit the game-winner, as senior guard Alyssa Nelson scored with just two seconds left to give Parkside a 74-72 win in the Northern Division matchup.

Trailing 72-59 with 3:05 to play in the fourth quarter, Purdue Northwest went on an 11-0 run in just 1:11 of game action. An and-one and a made three-point field goal from senior guard Danielle Nennig on consecutive possessions made the score 72-70 with 1:54 to play. The two-point lead remained for the next 1:48 until Brockington's clutch basket tied the score at 72 with just six seconds left before Nelson's heroics after a Parkside timeout.

Behind a career-high 12 three-point attempts, Nennig tallied a game-high 19 points for PNW to go along with five rebounds. Sophomore guard Anjel Galbraith went to the free-throw line a career-high 11 times, scoring 15 points on the night while tallying four rebounds and three assists. Brockington was in double-figures for the third straight contest, tallying 12 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists of her own.

Shooting and rebounding were the two main factors in the result, as the Rangers shot season-bests from the floor (51.7%) and three-point range (41.2%). Parkside also outdid the Pride 36-31 on the glass. PNW attempted a season-high 23 free-throw attempts compared to just seven for the Rangers, an advantage that allowed Purdue Northwest to stay within striking distance and mount the comeback.

Parkside began the game on a 9-2 run, with junior Hannah Plockelman scoring the first six points for the opposition. Over the course of the first quarter, the Pride chipped away and took its first lead of the game (16-15) on a Galbraith lay-up with a second left. The PNW lead reached as high as four in the second quarter before the Rangers closed the half on a 10-3 run to take a 35-32 advantage into the break.

A balanced offense highlighted by the three-pointers from Nennig allowed the Pride to run past the Rangers in the third, opening the quarter on a 17-7 run before a quick 10-0 flurry gave Parkside the lead back. After late lay-ups from Brockington and Galbraith gave PNW a one-point edge (53-52) heading into the fourth, UW-Parkside cranked up its defense and held the Pride scoreless for nearly five minutes, allowing the 13-point lead to build prior to PNW's comeback.

The Rangers were led by both Nelson and Plockelman. Nelson, the leading scorer for Parkside entering the game, had a near triple-double of 18 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. Plockelman scored a career-high 18 points while also tallying eight rebounds.
