Pride Split Doubleheader with UIndy

Despite a 7-3 win in game 1, PNW Baseball was unable to complete the sweep, falling 9-5.

GAME 1: PURDUE NORTHWEST 7, University of Indianapolis 3
Purdue Northwest Baseball opened up the Wednesday doubleheader with a win in Hammond against the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds. After letting the lead slip away in the third inning, the Pride bounced back by scoring a five in the fourth, eventually overcoming their opponent 7-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Danny Schneberger roped a base hit up the middle for a single in the bottom of the second. After a pair of throwing errors from UIndy, Nathan Lovisa brought home two runs on a base hit to centerfield. The Greyhounds answered back in the next half inning, scoring three runs on four hits.

A perfectly laid sacrifice bunt by Ray Hansen put Jacob Soules on second base with one out to start the bottom of the fourth. Lovisa singled, scoring Soules, who previously advanced to third on a wild pitch. With runners on first and second after a walk to Batistatos in the fifth, Ray Hilbrich blistered a ball up the middle, bringing in Lovisa. Hunter Thorn followed with a towering fly-ball that just got out of the park, giving the Black and Gold a 7-3 lead. PNW scored five runs on three hits in the inning.

Although the Pride left three on base in the bottom of the sixth, it wouldn't matter as PNW shut the door and gathered the 7-3 victory in game 1.

STAT LEADERS
Lovisa was perfect from the plate, collecting three hits in three at-bats with two RBIs and a run scored. Hunter Thorn went yard for his first home-run of the season, gathering two RBIs on the swing.

GAME 2: UNIVERSITY OF INDIANAPOLIS 9, Purdue Northwest 5
Looking for the afternoon sweep and despite a late comeback, the Pride could not overcome UIndy's seven-run lead, falling 9-5 after giving the Greyhounds free runners and opportunities in the first few innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pride found themselves in trouble early as the Greyhounds load the bases in the top of the first. A bunt single followed by a sac fly pushed two across for the Greyhounds, but after an appeal to second base, the tagging runner was called out for leaving second early, ending the inning.

The Black and Gold answered back in the bottom of the second inning as Thorn laced a double to left field, scoring one. Soules then hit a deep sac fly to left center, tying the game at two.

UIndy broke the game open in the top of the third with a two-run shot to dead center and a double in the right field corner, totaling five runs on three hits and making the score 7-2.

The Greyhounds scored two more runs in the game, one in the sixth and one in the eighth. The Pride were able scored one more run in the ninth on an RBI single from Soules and a two-RBI single from Riley Gallagher, but the rally was a little too late as the Pride were defeated 9-5.

STAT LEADERS
Freshman Riley Gallagher was 2-3 in game 2 with 2 RBIs, and Ray Hilbrich gathered two hits of his own. Thorn notched a hit with a run and an RBI in game 2 as well.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE PRIDE
PNW Baseball continues their homestand on Saturday, March 14 for two games against the University of Parkside Rangers. The non-conference matchup against a conference opponent begins at noon (CT).
