Pride Drops Nail-Biter to Lake Superior State in Overtime

Stretching to overtime on Senior Day, PNW fell to the Lakers 65-62

LAKE SUPERIOR STATE 65, PURDUE NORTHWEST 62
The Purdue University Northwest Women's Basketball team hosted the Lake Superior State Lakers on Senior Day, honoring graduating seniors Bayley Goodman and Shae Rhonehouse before tipping off an afternoon of GLIAC competition.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Savaya Brockington was the first to put points on the board with a two-point jump-shot followed by a layup and free-throw from Rhonehouse. Goodman found an open lane to the hoop for the left-handed layup soon after, stretching the Pride's lead to 7-2. The Lakers, however, found their footing to rally late in the quarter and take the lead, ending the first with a score of 19-11.

At the end of the first half, PNW found themselves down 31-22, shooting 37% from the field and 20% from downtown.

The Lakers opened up an 11-point lead by the end of the third quarter. PNW battled their way back throughout the fourth quarter, closing the gap to a three-point game at 54-51 with just over three minutes remaining in regulation. With 90-seconds remaining, a layup from Elexah Roepke closed the gap further and was followed by a jump shot at 0:58 from Brockington that tied it at 57-57. An impressive defensive stop in the closing seconds from the Pride forced a late turnover at 0:30, carrying the game into overtime.

Neither team could find the bottom of the basket through much of the extra period. At the final whistle, LSSU (8-18, 4-15 GLIAC) had just enough to claim the win over Purdue Northwest (6-21, 5-14 GLIAC) 65-62.

WHO LED THE WAY FOR THE PRIDE

Savaya Brockington led the team with a career-high 28 points, shooting 13-24 and 2-6 from three.

HEAR FROM COACH COURTNEY LOCKE
"I'm really proud of our fight tonight," said Locke. "This is a very tough conference and it's coming down to possessions. We have to have a growth mindset and keep growing every day. The game is starting to slow down for Savaya and it is starting to come easy for her. It's fun to watch her grow and become the player she is capable of being."

TEAM STATS
PNW shot 44% from the field, 22% from behind the three-point arc, and 50% from the charity stripe, holding the Lakers to 44%, 39%, and 64%, respectively. The Black and Gold recorded 34 points in the paint, 12 points off turnovers, and 19 bench points.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Pride will finish up their 2019-2020 season at home on Thursday, February 27 when they host the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m at the Hammond Fitness and Recreation Center. The night will also feature the Hometown Heroes Celebration, honoring military, veterans, law-enforcement, firefighters and EMT personnel.
