Pride Ends Season with Narrow Loss at Home Against Parkside Rangers

PNW Women's Basketball ended their 2019-2020 season at home with a 63-54 defeat against the Rangers

PARKSIDE 63, PURDUE NORTHWEST 54
The Purdue University Northwest Women's Basketball team hosted the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers for their 2019-2020 season finale. In an evening that also honored the Hometown Heroes in attendance, the Pride closed out their season with a narrow 63-54 loss to the visiting Rangers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
PNW opened the game with an early layup from Brittany Barnard before the Rangers found some footing to jump to a 9-2 lead within the first five minutes. Molly DeValkanaere responded after the first timeout of the game with a layup of her own that was followed by a deep shot from Shae Rhonehouse. At the end of the first, the Rangers would have shot 6-10 from three to extend their lead to 27-15.

Early foul trouble in the second quarter gave the Rangers several attempts from the charity stripe, getting to the bonus with just over six and a half minutes left in the first half. A trip to the line for Tayler Vauters helped close the Rangers' lead to a manageable 30-25. In the final minutes leading into halftime, both teams suffered a scoring drought, with the Rangers leading 36-31. At the end of the first half, the Pride shot 12-26 from the field, 2-5 from behind-the-arc and 5-8 from the free-throw line, compared to the Rangers' 10-28, 6-17 and 10-12, respectively.

The second half would continue the teams' drought until a pair of three-pointers from the Rangers broke the ongoing streak. Danielle Nennig responded with a quick layup near the seven-minute mark in the third quarter. Kennedy Jackson soon followed with a fast break layup off an assist from Savaya Brockington that was followed by another field goal to bring the Rangers' lead back down to 43-38. Parkside continued shooting threes, giving the Pride a number of opportunities to get defensive rebounds. At the end of the third quarter, the Rangers managed to hold on to their narrow lead with the score of 49-44.

The Pride continued to close in on Parkside throughout the fourth quarter, helped by an early pair of layups from Brockington. It was not until the five-minute mark that the Rangers started to pull away again, extending their lead to 57-48 off a floating layup. A three from Nennig helped bridge the gap as both teams continued to trade shots. Graduating seniors Bayley Goodman and Rhonehouse finished out the remaining two minutes on the court for the Pride until the final whistle, with Rhonehouse taking the last shot of the season, ending the game with a Parkside victory of 63-54.

WHO LED THE WAY FOR THE PRIDE
Savaya Brockington closed out her freshman season leading the way for the Pride, recording 21 points while shooting 56% from the field and 20% from downtown. She also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
