Huskies Use Big Fourth-Quarter to Pull away from the Pride

PNW falls short against Michigan Tech, 75-55

HAMMOND & WESTVILLE, Ind. -- The Purdue Northwest Women's Basketball team played host to the Michigan Tech Huskies Saturday afternoon in what would be the final game played at the Westville campus this season. The Pride were outscored 16-6 in the fourth quarter and eventually fell 75-55.

Statistical leaders for PNW included Anjel Galbraith, who led the Pride with 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and one block in her game-high 39 minutes of action. Molly DeValkenaere, who scored 10 of her 11 points in the first two quarters, finished 8-10 from the free-throw line, grabbed four rebounds and dished out one assist. Danielle Nennig recorded 11 points, three rebounds and an assist in her 36 minutes. Savaya Brockington finished with seven points, five rebounds and a team-high two steals. Brittany Barnard scored seven points as well, including 1-2 from the field and 4-5 from the free-throw line.

After a first quarter that ended with a tied score of 16-16, the Huskies connected on 11-16 second-quarter shots as well as making all six of their free-throws in the quarter, as they finished the first half with the 45-35 lead. The Pride got to the free-throw line very often in the first half, shooting 18-23 from the charity stripe in the half, including 12-13 in the second quarter. DeValkenaere's 10 points led the Pride during the first two quarters, as she made her only shot from the field and made 7-8 of her free-throw attempts. DeValkenaere also grabbed three of her four rebounds in the half. Nennig scored seven points and recorded one assist in the first half, and Galbraith had eight points, three rebounds, two assists and one block.

Michigan Tech held the lead for the remainder of the game, including finishing the third quarter with the 59-49 lead. Two three-pointers in the first minute of the fourth quarter extended the Huskies lead to 65-49. Gailbraith's runner with 6:13 left cut the Pride deficit to 67-51. Tayler Vauters connected on a three-pointer with 2:24 remaining, but that would conclude the scoring for the afternoon for PNW.

PNW Women's Basketball will next be in action on Thursday, January 16, as the Ashland Eagles will be in town. Tipoff back at the Hammond campus is set for 5 p.m. (CT).
