HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Purdue University Northwest men's tennis team started off their season on the right foot, entering the win column in their first match, as the Pride defeated University of St. Francis (Ill.), 7-2, Friday.
PNW started off winning all three doubles matches to begin the match to have a 3-0 advantage going into singles competition. Junior Jonluke Passett (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandberg) and junior Mauricio Villacres (Guayaquil, Ecuador) dominated at No. 3 doubles, not dropping a game at No. 3 doubles as the duo defeated Fernando Turiel and Thomas Schieffer, 8-0.
Leon Kah (Munich, Germany) and Dru Kennedy (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) defeated Mike Hasler and Ian Millan Vetokin of the Fighting Saints, 8-2. Joseph Kvint (Philadephia, Penn./Lower Moreland) and Moritz Gisy (Duesseldorf, Germany) wrapped doubles competition after defeating USF's Avilash Mishra and Miguel Rayos del Sol, 8-5.
Kvint won his first singles match as a member of the Pride at No. 4 singles against Turiel, 6-0, 6-3. Kah picked up the victory at No. 2 singles against Mishra, 6-2, 6-2.
Passett won at No. 5 singles against Hasler, 7-6 (6-4), 6-4. Kennedy was able to force a three-set tiebreaker as he defeated Schieffer after dropping the first set, 3-6, he fought back and won consecutive sets, 7-5, 1-0 (11-9).
PNW returns to action Saturday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Sept. 29 as the Pride compete in the Olivet Nazarene Invitational.
