HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Purdue Northwest men's tennis team earned its first-ever Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) victory as the Pride defeated Michigan Tech on Saturday. The Pride (7-7, 1-3 GLIAC) defeated the Huskies (0-9, 0-5 GLIAC), 5-4, at the Gates Tennis Center in Houghton, Mich., on Saturday afternoon.
Michigan Tech had the upper hand to start the match, winning two out of three doubles matches. Sophomore Ulf Grosseloh (Maximiliansau, Germany) and freshman Leon Kah (Munich, Germany) did not look back at No. 2 doubles, winning every game against MTU's Nico Caviglia and Simon Xiong, 8-0.
Junior Moritz Gisy (Duesseldorf, Germany) won at No. 2 singles in straight sets against MTU's Caviglia, 6-3, 6-3. Kah returned at No. 3 singles only dropping one game in both sets and winning 6-0, 6-1, against MTU's Ignacio Carbajosa.
Junior Diego Pimentel (Guayaquil, Ecuador) held off a rally by Xiong and pulled out the victory at No. 4 singles in a three-set thriller, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Sophomore Mauricio Villacres (Guayaquil, Ecuador) was able to hold off MTU's Juan Felipe Chica in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Gisy and Villacres fought hard at No. 1 doubles, but dropped their match to MTU's Mario Neto and Carbajosa, 8-4. Freshmen Carter Moldenhauer (Michigan City, Ind./Marquette) and Dru Kennedy (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) won two games at No. 3 doubles, but it was not enough as MTU's Chica and Illiya Chibirev, 8-2.
Kennedy fought hard at No. 3 singles, forcing a third set but ultimately fell to Chibirev, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
PNW has a quick turnaround as the Pride travel to Lake Superior State University (Mich.) Sunday morning to take on the Lakers with match time scheduled for 10 a.m. (CT).
