GRIFFITH, Ind. -- The Purdue Northwest men's tennis team put up a fight, but dropped a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match against the No. 17 team in the country (NCAA Division II), Ferris State University (Mich.) on Friday. The No. 17 ranked Bulldogs (18-2, 8-0 GLIAC) defeated the Pride (7-9, 1-5 GLIAC), 9-0, at Match Point Tennis and Fitness Club in Griffith, Ind.
Ferris State started the match winning all three doubles matches to take the 3-0 advantage going into singles play. Sophomore Ulf Grosseloh (Maximiliansau, Germany) and freshman Leon Kah (Munich, Germany) nearly pulled off the upset at No. 2 doubles, but FSU's Austin DeBruyne and Daniil Tarantinov edged them out, 8-6.
Kah fought hard almost pulling off the upset at No. 3 singles against FSU's Tarantinov, but lost in a three-set thriller, 6-4, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8). Junior Moritz Gisy (Dusseldorf, Germany) lost a tight match at No. 2 singles after getting edged out in the first set, 7-6. Gisy dropped the second set, 6-3.
Sophomore Mauricio Villacres (Guayaquil, Ecuador) almost pulled off a third set at No. 5 singles, but FSU's Pablo Munoz Baroja won in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. Grosseloh put up a fight at No. 1 singles winning four games in the second set, but was not enough as FSU's Steward Sell won 6-1, 6-4.
Freshman Carter Moldenhauer (Michigan City, Ind./Marquette) won two games in the first set and three games in the second set, but dropped his match at No. 6 singles against FSU's Mathis Guerre, 6-2, 6-3.
Purdue Northwest has a quick turnaround as the Pride return to action Saturday morning for another GLIAC match taking on Northwood University (Mich.) at 9 a.m. CT at Match Point Tennis and Fitness Club.
