HOMEWOOD, Ill. - The Purdue University Northwest men's tennis team held their own against NCAA Division I Chicago State, but dropped their match, 4-3, to the Cougars at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet and Fitness Club on Sunday. PNW won at No. 3 doubles after Mauricio Villacres (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and Dru Kennedy (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) took their match.
The Pride (3-3) led 2-1 after doubles competition after Leon Kah (Munich, Germany) and Ulf Grosseloh (Maximiliansau, Germany) won at No. 2 doubles by defeating Chicago State's George Botha and Cody Wurzelbacher, 6-2. PNW also won at No. 3 doubles after Villacres and Kennedy won by default.
Chicago State bounced back in singles competition going 3-1. Kah also won his match at No. 3 singles by defeating Chicago State's Botha, in a three-set thriller after dropping his first set 6-7 (4). He fought back and won two straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
Grosseloh fought hard at No. 1 singles, but dropped a hard-fought match in three sets to Chicago State's Felix Savard, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Moritz Gisy (Duesseldorf, Germany) nearly forced a tie-breaker, but dropped his match in two close sets to Chicago State's Rohan Wattley, 6-4, 7-6.
Kennedy fell in his match at No. 5 singles, in a close first set 6-4, before dropping the second set 6-1. Gisy and Carter Moldenhauer (Michigan City, Ind./Marquette) won two games at No. 1 doubles, but suffered a setback to Chicago State's Savard and Christian Gonzalez, 6-2.
PNW returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 25, as the Pride travel for a pair of matches against Central College at 10 a.m. and Morningside College at 2 p.m.
