Box Score HAMMOND, Ind. – The Purdue University Northwest men's basketball team used an impressive shooting performance from all over the court to defeat Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Saint Xavier University, 101-70, Saturday afternoon.
The Pride (8-12, 6-6 CCAC) shot 59.2 percent from the field and connected on 11 trifectas for a 50 percent clip from beyond the arc.
Juniors Torrance Johnson (Chicago Heights, Ill./Chicago Hope Academy) (Chicago Heights, Ill./Chicago Hope Academy) and Tyree Coe (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) led the Pride offensively with 26 points each, with Johnson shooting 13-of-20 from the field and Coe connecting on 11-of-14 field goals including a quartet of three-point field goals.
Chandler Spring (Covington, Ind./Covington) (Covington, Ind./Covington) recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds while senior Shereff Knight (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) (Michigan City, Ind./Michigan City) also racked up a double-double with 13 points and 11 assists with seven rebounds.
After the game was even at 6-6 early on in the contest, Purdue Northwest would go on a 10-2 run led by Coe and Johnson to put the Pride ahead, 16-8 with 13:47 left in the first half.
The Black and Gold continued to extend its lead for the rest of the period, taking a 50-29 advantage heading in to the break.
The Cougars would start off the second half on a 17-2 run, and eventually cut its deficit to five points, 55-50 with 12:28 remaining.
PNW would refuse to let SXU get any closer, jumping back to a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.
Mike Vukas (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic) and Caleb Brannon (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) would each connect on three-point field goals in the final two minutes of the game, to extend the lead for the Pride and come away with the 31-point victory.
Senior Cyril Lewis (Houston, Texas/Virginia Union) (Houston, Texas/Virginia Union) also had an impressive shooting performance, scoring 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting while bringing down 5 rebounds.
Purdue Northwest returns to action on Wednesday, January 18, when they host Governors State at the Student Services and Activities Complex in Westville, Ind. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. (CT).
