Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader against Roosevelt, Walk Off in Game Two Thriller

The Purdue Northwest baseball team returned home Thursday and earned a GLIAC doubleheader sweep over Roosevelt, taking game one 7-3 before walking it off for a 9-8 victory in the nightcap at Laborers' Local 41 Field.

The Breakdown
Game 1: W (7-3) (7 Innings)
  • Purdue Northwest used a big third inning to take control and never looked back in the opener.
  • Joey Guiliano (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) led the Pride with two hits and two runs scored, while Billy Chidsey (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) drove in two runs on a key third-inning single.
  • Brett Bounds (Morris, Ill./Morris Community) added a hit and two RBIs, and Braylon Holland (Hobart, Ind./Andrean) chipped in a hit and an RBI.
  • The Pride broke through in the third inning, plating five runs on three hits and taking advantage of a Roosevelt error. Chidsey delivered a two-run single before Drew Kosteba (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) added a sacrifice fly. Bounds followed with an RBI single, and Holland capped the inning with an RBI walk to give Purdue Northwest a 5-0 lead.
  • Roosevelt got on the board in the fifth, but the Pride responded in the sixth with two more runs. Guiliano doubled and later scored on a balk, while Bounds drove in a run to extend the lead to 7-1.
  • Owen Walkowiak (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) earned the win on the mound, tossing 5.0 innings while allowing just one run and striking out five. Joey DalPonte (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) closed out the final two innings to secure the victory.
Game 2: W (9-8) (9 Innings)
  • Purdue Northwest outlasted Roosevelt in a back-and-forth battle, securing a walk-off 9-8 victory to complete the sweep.
  • Billy Chidsey (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point), Drew Kosteba (St. John, Ind./Lake Central), and Nathan Koster (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Mount Pleasant) each recorded three hits to lead the Pride's 15-hit effort. Kosteba drove in a run and scored twice, while Koster, Brett Bounds (Morris, Ill./Morris Community), Gabe Bush (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso), and Braylon Holland (Hobart, Ind./Andrean) each added RBIs.
  • The Pride struck first with two runs in the opening inning behind RBI hits from Kosteba and Koster. Purdue Northwest extended the lead in the third, plating four runs with contributions from Bounds and a sacrifice fly by Bush to build a 6-1 advantage.
  • After Roosevelt chipped away with runs in the third and fifth innings, Purdue Northwest added another run in the fifth on an RBI single from Holland to make it 6-2.
  • Roosevelt would tie the game up in the top of the ninth.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Kosteba doubled to start the rally. After a walk to Bounds and a fielder's choice put runners on, Zach Wright (Munster, Ind./Munster) delivered an RBI single bringing home the winning run to secure the 9-8 walk-off victory.
  • Colin Pfeifer (Morris, Ill./Morris Community) earned the win after tossing 4.2 innings, allowing two runs while striking out two. The bullpen worked through the middle innings, and Preston Burton (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) recorded the final outs as Purdue Northwest completed the comeback.
