Baseball holds off No. 14 Wayne State in gritty upset victory

The Pride baseball team took on #14 Wayne State this Sunday in a GLIAC matchup where the Pride secured a thrilling 5-4 victory.

The Breakdown
Game 1: W (5-4) – 9 Innings
  • Brayden Barrett (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Drew Kosteba (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) delivered a huge performance, finishing 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Billy Chidsey (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) added two hits and an RBI, while Joey Guiliano (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) scored twice and reached base multiple times.
  • Gabe Bush (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) chipped in with a hit and a run scored, and Owen Winters (Kouts, Ind./Kouts) contributed off the bench with a hit. The Pride offense totaled 11 hits on the day, consistently applying pressure throughout the game.
  • On the mound, Joey DalPonte (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) got the start, allowing one run on three hits over 3.0 innings while striking out four. Brett Bounds (Morris, Ill./Morris Community) earned the win in relief, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings. Dylan McGee (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) followed with 1.1 shutout innings, and Owen Walkowiak (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) secured the save despite a late push from Wayne State.
  • Wayne State struck first in the second inning with a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead. The Pride responded in the fourth when Kosteba launched a two-run homer to give Purdue Northwest a 2-1 advantage.
  • Purdue Northwest added to its lead in the sixth as Kosteba delivered an RBI single to make it 3-1. The Pride stayed in control before breaking through again in the ninth inning. Barrett drove in a run with a double, and Chidsey followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-1.
  • Wayne State mounted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three runs and bringing the tying run on base. However, Walkowiak managed to close the door and secure the 5-4 victory for the Pride.
  • Purdue Northwest combined timely hitting with strong bullpen performances to hold off the late surge and earn the win.
