Softball splits final day of Maryville Invitational

The Purdue Northwest Softball team wrapped up play at the Maryville Invite on Sunday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri, splitting its final two games of the weekend. The Pride dropped a tough walk-off decision to Hillsdale, 7-6, before bouncing back with an 8-7 victory over host Maryville to close the tournament.

Game 1
The Breakdown

  • Freshman Gracie Jensen (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) led the Pride offense with three hits and three RBIs, including her fifth-inning home run.
  • Junior Emma Fair (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) added two hits and an RBI, while junior Kyle Dugan, freshman Jessy Del Toro (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) and senior Amanda DeBoer (Dyer, Ind./Illiana Christian) each recorded one hit.
  • Sophomore Jordyn Roop (Hudson, Ill./University) started in the circle and allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits over 3.0 innings with a strikeout.
  • Senior Hailie Charmat (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) took the loss in relief after tossing 3.2 innings and allowing three runs on three hits while striking out four.
  • Purdue Northwest jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after taking advantage of a Hillsdale error that allowed a run to score before Gracie Jensen (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) delivered an RBI single to center field.
  • Hillsdale answered with a four-run third inning, highlighted by a solo home run from Cayla Contreras and a two-run double from Nathalie Hagle to take a 4-2 lead.
  • The Pride responded in the fourth inning with RBI singles from Fair and Dugan to even the score at 4-4.
  • Contreras struck again for Hillsdale in the bottom of the fourth inning with her second solo home run of the game to give the Chargers a 5-4 advantage.
  • PNW regained the lead in the fifth inning when Jensen launched a two-run home run to left field, putting the Pride ahead 6-5.
  • Hillsdale completed the comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning as Anna Chellman delivered a two-out, two-run single to left center for the walk-off win.

Game 2
The Breakdown

  • Jensen had a standout performance at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
  • Freshman Sylvia Mudis (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) finished with two hits, two RBIs and a home run, while sophomore Jadyn Ramer (Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) added two hits and an RBI.
  • Dugan also recorded two hits and stole a base in the victory.
  • Sophomore Abbey Bond (Saint John, Ind./Andrean) earned the win after pitching 6.2 innings, allowing seven runs on 12 hits while striking out eight.
  • Freshman Chloe Tanner (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) entered in the final inning and recorded the last out to secure her first collegiate save.
  • Laila Ruiz and Emily Erb both led Maryville with two hits and two RBIs each.
  • Maryville struck first in the third inning with a two-run double from Laila Ruiz to take an early 2-0 lead.
  • Purdue Northwest chipped away beginning in the fourth inning when Ramer singled to center field to bring home Jensen.
  • The Pride tied the game in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Jensen that scored Dugan.
  • Mudis gave PNW its first lead in the sixth inning with a solo home run to center field, making the score 3-2.
  • Maryville answered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single from Marley Williamson to tie the game at 3-3.
  • The Pride erupted for five runs in the seventh inning to take control of the game. Jensen reached and advanced on a throwing error that allowed a run to score before Mudis added an RBI single. Fair capped the rally with a two-run double to center field to extend the lead to 8-3.
  • Maryville mounted a late rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs and bringing the tying run to the plate before Tanner recorded the final out to secure the save.
