Baseball Rallies for Walk-Off Win, Splits Doubleheader with Saginaw Valley State

The Pride baseball team took on Saginaw Valley State University this Saturday in a GLIAC Doubleheader where the Pride would rally to take game one 13-12 in walk-off fashion, before falling in game two 15-5

The Basics

The Breakdown
Game 1: W (13-12) - 7 Innings
  • Brett Bounds (Morris, Ill./Morris Community) delivered a huge performance at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs, two stolen bases, and three runs scored to lead the Pride offense.
  • Joey Guiliano (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) added a 2-for-4 day with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored, while Owen Winters (Kouts, Ind./Kouts) collected two hits including a triple and scored twice.
  • Zach Wright (Munster, Ind./Munster) contributed three RBIs, highlighted by a two-RBI triple, and Billy Chidsey (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) added three RBIs of his own, including a clutch two-run single.
  • Derek Kubek (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) chipped in a double and two RBIs, as the Pride totaled 13 hits and nine walks in the game.
  • Mitchell Stanton (South Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) got the start on the mound, allowing eight runs (five earned) over 4.0 innings. Dylan McGee (Oswego, Ill./Oswego), Jacob Chajet (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel Catholic), Joey DalPonte (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport), and Ethan Knopf (Crown Point, Ind./Lake Central) all saw time in relief, with Knopf earning the win after tossing a key inning out of the bullpen.
  • Saginaw Valley came out aggressive, scoring three runs in the first and adding another in the second before plating three more in the third to jump out to a 7-0 lead. The Cardinals added a run in the fourth to extend the advantage to 8-1.
  • Purdue Northwest began to chip away in the fourth inning, scoring three runs behind RBI hits from Zach Wright (Munster, Ind./Munster) and Brett Bounds (Morris, Ill./Morris Community) along with a sacrifice fly from Brayden Barrett (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) to cut the deficit to 8-4.
  • The Pride continued their comeback in the fifth as Owen Winters (Kouts, Ind./Kouts) tripled and later scored, while Bounds and Kubek each drove in runs to make it 8-7.
  • Saginaw Valley responded with three runs in the sixth inning to push the lead back to 11-7, but the Pride answered immediately. Guiliano led off the bottom half with a solo home run before Kubek, Chidsey, and Wright each delivered RBI hits to bring Purdue Northwest within one at 11-10.
  • After the Cardinals added a run in the seventh to make it 12-10, the Pride mounted a final rally. Guiliano reached base to start the inning before Winters worked a walk and Kosteba was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Bounds delivered a clutch RBI walk to make it 12-11, and a wild pitch tied the game. Moments later, the Pride completed the comeback with a walk-off run to secure the 13-12 victory.
  • In total, Purdue Northwest recorded 13 hits, drew nine walks, and overcame a six-run deficit to complete the comeback win.
The Breakdown
Game 2: L (15-5) – 7 Innings
  • Brayden Barrett (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) and Joey Guiliano (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) each recorded multiple hits to lead the Pride offense, while Owen Winters (Kouts, Ind./Kouts) and Drew Kosteba (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) each added a hit and an RBI.
  • Brett Bounds (Morris, Ill./Morris Community) continued his strong day at the plate, reaching base multiple times and driving in a run, while Billy Chidsey (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) also contributed an RBI as the Pride finished with double-digit baserunners.
  • The Pride used multiple arms on the mound in game two, with the Cardinals capitalizing early and often to build a sizable lead.
  • Saginaw Valley jumped out to an early advantage, scoring multiple runs in the first inning and continuing to add on in the middle innings to take control of the game.
  • Purdue Northwest showed fight offensively, putting together scoring innings and creating traffic on the bases, but were unable to keep pace with the Cardinals' offense.
  • Despite pushing across five runs, the Pride could not overcome the deficit as Saginaw Valley closed out the 15-5 win in seven innings.
  • In total, Purdue Northwest recorded multiple hits and continued to generate offense but could not slow down Saginaw Valley's bats in the loss.
