D2 Hockey takes two close battles against Marian

The Purdue Northwest ACHA D2 Men's Hockey Team continued its perfect start to the season, sweeping a two-game series against Marian University. The Lions earned a hard-fought 3–2 victory on the road Friday before returning home to The Kube on Saturday and holding off the Sabres, 4–3.

Game One (W, 3-2)

Inside the Numbers

  • Purdue Northwest goaltender senior Luka Krstulovich earned the win, stopping 19 of 21 shots in a full 60-minute performance.
  • The Lions received goals from senior Jared Topil, senior RJ Swaw and junior Collin Kozijn.
  • Freshman Jaxson Armstrong, senior Savva Verbetskii and senior Sean Curtin each recorded an assist.

  • Marian opened the scoring at 2:32 of the first period before Purdue Northwest answered at 11:40 when Topil scored a power-play goal with assists from Armstrong and Verbetskii.
  • Marian regained the lead 1:25 into the second period, but the Lions responded at 16:07 when Swaw scored a power-play goal to even the game at 2–2.
  • Purdue Northwest took the lead for good at 3:57 of the third period when Kozijn found the back of the net with an assist from Curtin.
  • Krstulovich turned aside all four Marian shots in the third period, while the Lions defense protected the one-goal advantage to finish off the 3–2 road victory.

Inside the Numbers

  • Krstulovich earned his second win of the weekend, stopping 16 of 19 shots in another complete-game performance.
  • The Lions received goals from Curtin, junior Nate Cheney, Kozijn and junior Gabriel Santa Maria.
  • Senio JT Verdino, sophomore Brayden Mitchell, sophomore Pellegrino Pescatore, Swaw, Curtin and senior Tyson McCaig each recorded an assist.
  • Purdue Northwest held a 44–19 advantage in shots on goal and converted once on its lone power-play opportunity.
The Breakdown
  • Purdue Northwest opened the scoring at 5:26 of the first period when Curtin scored off an assist from Verdino.
  • Marian answered with a power-play goal at 17:37, sending the game into the first intermission tied at 1–1.
  • The Lions regained the lead at 11:03 of the second period when Cheney scored with assists from Mitchell and Pescatore.
  • Marian answered just 44 seconds later to tie the game again, but Purdue Northwest responded at 16:52 when Kozijn scored a power-play goal off an assist from Swaw, giving the Lions a 3–2 advantage heading into the third.
  • Marian tied the contest once again at 4:00 of the third period, setting up a dramatic finish at The Kube.
  • With just 1:03 remaining in regulation, Santa Maria delivered the game-winning goal, scoring off an assist from McCaig.
  • Krstulovich and the Lions defense shut the door during the final minute, securing the 4–3 victory and completing the weekend sweep of Marian.
